Research

The mission of IITF Research is to develop and disseminate scientifically based knowledge that contributes to the sustainable management of the forests, wiand watersheds of the American tropics. Our vision is to be a center for excellence where creativity and accomplishments result in quality products and services that anticipate the needs of society.

The IITF research program has been addressing problems of tropical forestry and ecology for over sixty years. Research is conducted on restoration and rehabilitation of damaged forests; assessments of ecosystems; ecophysiological studies of trees; the affects of land use on hydrologic cycles, forest recovery, and species distributions; the ecological effects of forest fragmentation, and studies of the biodiversity and ecology of reptiles, amphibians, aquatic organisms and migratory birds.

Scientists, research technicians, and administrators work on ecological issues in the Caribbean, Latin America, the Continental US, Alaska and Canada. The central offices are located in the University of Puerto Rico Botanical Garden in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico and include a soil, plant tissue, and water chemistry laboratory, a GIS and Remote Sensing laboratory, a library, and a conference facility. Offsite research facilities include the Sabana Field Station in the Caribbean National Forest, the Estate Thomas St. Croix Experimental Forest, and the Luquillo Experimental Forest.

Our research program is organized into three interrelated research problems:
