History of the Institute
Parent Organization: United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service
Initially designated an Experiment Station by Act of Congress (McSweeney-McNary Forest Research Act of 1928). Designated as the Tropical Forest Experiment station in 1939: and Institute of Tropical Forestry in 1961. The Unit reported to Washington, DC until 1978 when it was transferred to the Southern Forest Experiment Station. Known as Research Work Unit SO-1152 (1978-1985) and as SO-4151 (1985-1993). Designated as International Institute of Tropical Forestry in 1993 by the 1990 Farm Bill. Now reports to the Washington Office.
