New web page: Lichens of Puerto Rico

Developed from a checklist compiled by IITF graduate student Joel Mercado, the page features photos and a list of 1,181 species of lichenized and lichenicolous fungi known to occur in Puerto Rico and related offshore islands.

A new web page has been developed by Joel Mecado, Biology graduate student with IITF, and the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras Herbarium. The web page, http://lichensofpuertorico.herbario.upr.edu/, features photos and a checklist of lichenized and lichenicolous fungi known to occur in Puerto Rico and related offshore islands. This checklist is an appendix of a paper by Joel Mercado-Díaz and herbarium curator Eugenio Santiago-Valentín. Although the list is a work in progress, it represents a useful tool for anyone wishing to get acquainted with the lichenological biodiversity of the island. This version of the list totals 1,181 species. This is a tremendous new resource for students, researchers, and the public!
